Packaging made from rice straw

A collaboration with rice farmers of the Thong Pho Community in Uthai Thani province for the pre-processing of rice straw.

Processing rice straw in Thailand

About this project

Together with researchers from the Kasetsart Agricultural and Agro-Industrial Product Improvement Institute (KAPI) of Kasetsart University, Gracz has developed food-safe, compostable packaging based on rice straw. The properties “compostable” and “no added chemicals” are as stated by Gracz; we are requesting the underlying certification.

How we contribute

Green QR Code supports this project with a financial contribution to Gracz and the participating farmers. The project does not generate carbon credits; the contribution is not an offset of emissions.

Why this matters

After the rice harvest, rice straw is traditionally burned in the fields, producing large amounts of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). This innovation offers an alternative: the farmers pre-process the straw and deliver it to the Gracz factory, where it is turned into packaging. The straw no longer needs to be burned.

  • Less PM2.5 from burning agricultural waste
  • Extra income for local rice farmers
  • Food-safe, compostable packaging (as stated by Gracz)
